Assignment 6 : My Gestalt Principles

Theme: Design analysis (PowerPoint presentation)
–group project (group of 2)
–select one good and one bad (in your opinion) design (e.g. poster, magazine advertisement or information brochure)
–analyze both designs and build a case to support your opinion.
–analysis should be based on visual principles (visual form, visual harmony, colour and gestalt principles)

Good poster -

  • It has good symmetry of the background, and it is followed through to the figure.
  • It has a very clear figure and ground.
  • It has simple colors and san serif font. Use of "American" colors.

Bad Poster -

  • There is no similarity and continuity.
  • The pictures are of different styles
  • The pictures have no direction to follow
  • There is no proximity seen in the figure or background.
  • There is not much closure as despite the heart the graphics are cut off by the border.
  • The placement of the grapics are very cluttered and do not follow any principles.
  • The font type, size and colors used are very different.

Assignment 5 : Christmas Card

Greeting card:
Theme – Christmas, New Year Near at Hand
–Pick your favorite quote related to the theme (snow, blessing, bells, trees, candles, santa claus, love, angel, magic, romance, firework, celebration, lights, party, gifts, resolution, etc)
–Design a greeting card (sponsored by Holiday greeting card Pte ltd)
–Card should convey the theme primarily through colours (85%).
–Try out different color schemes in A3 (as many as possible)
–Size of the artwork: A4 or smaller
–Submissions should be in the form of colour print out.
Objectives
–Developing necessary skill in using colour palette
–Developing necessary techniques in communicating the message through colours
–Understanding process of colour scheme selection and usage
The picture itself is rather lonely, as my concept of christmas is "white christmas", unlike the normal "red" and joyous concept.
The three colors used are blue, white and black.
This is the different colors tried. I obviously ran out of colors to try at the end and started playing around with the hue and staturation. I yielded some cool results.
Unlike my rough, the colors that i use seem to be unable to convey a joyous feeling.
Green which represents illness's looks errie on the card.
Red which is supposed to convey warmth in this case still looks rather sad. Perhaps the density and hue of the red was not bright enough.
Purple and black/white seems to convey melanchony. Perhaps it is due to the picture or as before due to the hues I chose.

This is the rough for my christmas card. I tried adding some colors just to observe the effects.

Assignment 4 : Stop Gambling

Changes made after Mr Alfred said that "Stop gambling" was too tacky. I changed the font so that it would fit the theme of "burning".

Poster Design : Save, prevent, kill
–Pick a topic related to the theme (e.g.. Save forest, kill mosquitoes, save singlish, stop pollution etc.)
–Write a copy (text which goes on poster) of not more than 150 words
–Design the poster such that it coveys the meaning through layout (placement of visual elements - photos, text, graphics elements etc)
–Size of the artwork: A3
–Submissions should be in the form of colour print out.

Objectives:
–Understanding the importance of basic visual elements and design principles in communicating a message
–Developing necessary techniques to communicate the message through form

I chose Gambling as my theme. In my opinion, out of all the effects of gambling (financial difficulties etc), the loss of families and relationship is the most appalling side effect to me. Hence i wanted to potray the effect of losing your family due to gambling in this poster.
I used a background that resembles a fire due to the line "burnt your fingers from gambling", and also because warm colors like yellow and orange is eye catching.
The Silhouette shows a women with her child leaving her husband which is a compulsive gambler. The women is walking out of the door and into the "light" by leaving him, and it is too late for regret.

This is the rough.

I originally wanted to do a poster on domestic violence. But gave up since i couldn't recreat the bruises on the hands.

Assignment 3 : U C wat I C

??

OMG? 1 MILLION?

MINE!!!!!!!!!!!

FIGHT!!!

WINNER!!!

outdated cheque =.=

Classroom Assignment. Showing the picture of someone climbing up the stairs. But you do not know where he is heading to, and where he arrived from.

Assignment 2 : No Sleeping Sign

This is a pictogram comprising of icon, surrounding (it would be posted up in the study area), symbol (the cross out equates to not doing the action) and action (sleeping)

ok. this is my sign for NUS. I came up with this sign after much fustration with not being able to get seats at the study area when there are people sleeping there. I started out with a picture at my home and above is the results. It is form realistic to abstract if its not apparent btw =X

This abstraction is between a request to students and a "ban" to sleeping. I mean you cant really ban sleeping. It would be quite impossible to enforce this.

i chose the fifth abstraction as it was simple enough, and yet not so abstract that it is just a circle on a black line.

The rough for this assignement.

Assignment 1 : Me, myself and I

both of them took me nearly forever and lots of swearing at the computer to complete =X. But tada!~ here is the completed version!

I chose this version over the other because the focus of the other was on the insect and the insect swatter instead of the trail ( the trail of the insect makes up my name).

ok. This is the product of my entire afternoon. >< comments ="D">

Assignment 1 : Me, myself and I

all right! this was the product of my entire break. after much tryin and tons of help (i.e instructions and comments from friends) i finally colored the pictures in! =D

I chose this picture over the one chasing after the balloons as my friends said that it was not really representive of "liking".

P.S the "hate" picture is on top. And i used a software called "freehand". Much easier to use. Perhaps could ask someone how to use it =p

This is the picture about my likes, which is obviously balloons. I used the strings to form the letters of my name. Please give some opinions about the idea. Thanks. Below is my disastrous attempt with photoshop, which i will attempt to fix during the workshop next week.
